Factory-Reconditioned Dyson DC 14 All Floors Upright Bagless Vacuum, Steel Yellow
Named for its power and uncompromising approach to pet hair, the remanufactured Dyson DC14 upright vacuum cleaner was skillfully engineered by James Dyson, inventor of the world's first cyclonic bagless vacuum cleaner. Unlike bagged or bagless systems that often lose suction power from dust clogging the bag or filter, nothing obstructs the airflow of this unit. Its Root8Cyclone technology features conical chambers that generate 150,000 g's of centrifugal force, pushing dust and dirt out of the airflow into the vacuum's 0.71-gallon collection cup. With no bag to clog, the vacuum's 250 air watts of suction power remain steady.
Its large, transparent collection cup is easy to check and is both hygienic and quick to empty--simply pop it off, hold it over a trash bin, and pull the trigger to release the dust without having to touch it. No need to buy bags or filters of any kind. The vacuum comes with a pre-motor filter that captures particles down to 0.1 microns in size (e.g., pollen) and is washable. Its post-motor electrostatic filter, which never needs replacing, traps carbon emissions from the motor. Approved for allergy sufferers by the British Allergy Foundation, the vacuum's lifetime HEPA filter doesn't clog and provides cleaner expelled air.
Thanks to its automatic carpet-height adjustment feature, the upright vacuum maintains constant contact with the floor to maximize dust pickup, and its brush bar turns off at the touch of a button to protect rugs and delicate floors. The DC 14 is ideal for bare floors and carpets, with suction channeled right to the edges of the cleaner head.
The vacuum's wide channel picks up large pieces, and for instant stair and high-reach cleaning, the vacuum comes with a cleverly stowed, 17-foot quick-release hose. Its 35.4-foot power cord, meanwhile, along with the hose, provides a maximum reach of 52.4 feet. The unit weighs 18.6 pounds and features a low handle that makes it feel lighter to carry. Designed for heavy-duty household cleaning, the upright vacuum measures 14 by 44.88 by 13.38 inches (W x H x D) and carries a 90-day warranty.

Test Report

Great Vacuum / Report
I've had this vacuum for about 3 weeks now and so-far-so-good since it's a re-manufactured item. This vacuum sucks up just about everything and easy to dump the waste. My only complaint and it's not really a complaint...for the money...Dyson should give you more tools. I will probably purchase the long soft brush attachment for picture frames, etc. I would have given it 5 stars, but the price is high with bare minimum tools, and, also, the warranty was not good for the re-manufacture purchase. I would highly recommend this vacuum, especially if you have pets and kids. My home hasn't been this dust-less in years.

Awesome Suction / Report
I read and read the reviews and debated and debated and finally ordered and do not regret making this purchase in the least. I was hesitant about getting a factory reconditioned but even more hesitant about paying $429 for a new one. When it got here, I was a little disappointed when I took it out of the box because it had some scuff marks and the canister was dirty. Once I turned it on and started vacuuming, though, all disappointment left and I have even put more scuff marks on it since and I don't care. It works great! I was dancing around all happy and my husband and daughter looked at me like I was crazy. It was waiting for me when I got home from a trip and I was exhausted but I still vacuumed the whole house! I mainly wanted it because I have a dog and it has been a chore to get her hair out of the carpet, I have allergies, and I love that you don't have to change filters. I just want everyone to know that all I had to do was vacuum over where a huge amount of her (dog) hair was and it all came up easily! I decided not to get the ones with attachments because the reviews were (overall) not positive and I didn't really see myself using them anyway. It does what I bought it for and I have even took it to my two offices (different counties) and vacuumed there and it worked well. I haven't had any problems with it not vacuuming (ratcheting others have spoke of) except once and it was thin carpet so I put it on bare floors and it worked fine. I gave it four stars because even though it is awesome, the wheels and other parts appear to be made from cheap plastic and the price is too much for them to skimp on that.

This vacuum rocks / Report
I'm a long time Oreck XL user. I saw the deal for a refurb on passwird.com, so I grabbed one. I can't believe the volume of dirt this thing pulled out of my carpets after they had been cleaned with the Oreck. It is heavier than the Oreck, but the complaints that it's "too heavy" are exaggerated. I also have had no trouble using the attachments. The trick is to completely extend the flexible hose one time. This keeps it from wanting to drag the base unit after you. The overall industrial design is great although I find the placement of the power button a little quirky. Small price to pay. I'd buy it again.

Complicated, heavy, hard to use / Report January 16, 2006
We are disappointed with the Dyson DC14. We fell for the enduring story of the persistent innovator and were wowed by the hand-is-faster-than-the-eye tool magician that could reconfigure the unit like a Transformer toy. We were impressed by how well it sucked up the sand on the floor in the salesroom. We even bought the $70 add on floor sweeper accessory.

However using at our home is another story.

This thing is very heavy and bulky. That makes lifting it up hard for even well-built men. Even though it rolls nicely, it's still hard to maneuver. The big plastic head is large and doesn't go under ANYTHING.

It's hard to get the pieces apart and together to use it as intended. The quality of the vacuuming is influenced a great deal by the surface. For example, it's good on carpets with average tuft, but doesn't do well on industrial, low napp carpets like those with a lot of sand and dirt in our breezeway. Also when you run off of a carpet with fringe like some of our oriental style rugs, the fringe sets up a terrifying noise in the Dyson.

On the carpet settings you can't use it on hardwood floors and conversely. This means you have to make two passes in rooms with a rug / carpet and hardwood or other hard surface. First do the carpet, then disassemble the unit to put on the accessory head to do the hardwood.

The $70 accessory head is very hard to attach to the main extender tube/handle. It doesn't snap lock like other accessories. It's a "press fit" and very hard to get on square and even, which makes the head skid at an odd angle on the floor.

Taking the extender out isn't obvious. Press the big yellow button. Slide the hidden end of the flex tube out of the extender. It snaps when its on the way out. Unsnap it. Then rotate the extender 180 degrees and snap it back. Presto. It now looks like a light saber on the end of an elephants trunk.

The worst thing is the flex tube. Even though it is intended to extend about 17 feet, getting it to do so is just about impossible without bolting the Dyson to the floor. The spring inside the flex tube is way too strong (for no obvious reason). It you extend it even a little bit the vac tries to follow up. The main missing accessory for this product is a good old fashioned, fixed length (15'-20') flex tube so you can get to windows, doors and ceilings without having the vac chase you across the room.

We do like the fact that it doesn't use bags but there are many vacs around now that cost $100 or less that have similar technology.

The Dyson must be well intended for the time the developer put into this. We just don't think that they spend much time using their own products on a day to day basis.

It's effective but very, very inefficient. It works but is hard to use. It's way to expensive.
